Paintings, Photos and Sketches from my Residency at the Mark Rothko Museum’s 22nd Annual Painting Symposium in Daugavpils, Latvia, 2026.

Here are the two paintings I completed during my Residency at the Symposium in Daugavpils, Sept 20 through Oct 3, 2026.

“Vienibas Iela” (“Unity Street”), Acrylic on Linen, 120 × 150 cm, 2026.

“Balcony Totem”, Acrylic on linen, 120 × 150 cm, 2026.

Below is a slideshow of the painting images and sketches.

I had the honor of being invited back for this Painting Symposium after participating in the Residency Program at the Museum in 2025. I truly immersed myself in the experience of Daugavpils, which is a city of many layers, historical and architectural. I walked the streets, especially at night to see them uninhabited, put my back up against the buildings, and imagined what I had, as the building, to offer up to the streets. I glanced around and noticed the prominent balconies, thin facades attached to rough blocked construction, and offsetting fauna. These elements went into the making of the two paintings shown above, which I donated to the Museum’s Collection.

Below are photos from the Symposium. (Official photography by Santa Suhanova).
